Juan Guzmán 1922-1982


Juan Guzmán, born Hans Gutmann Guster, also known as “Juanito” was a German born Mexican photojournalist. He was known as a war photographer of the Spanish Civil War and later for his work with Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. His most famous image was of Marina Ginestà at the top of Hotel Colón in Barcelona.  It is one of the most iconic photographs of the Spanish Civil War.  In 1936 he did join the Spanish Civil War as a volunteer. He later became a Spanish citizen and changed his name to Juan Guzmán. After the war, Guzmán fled to Mexico, arriving there in 1940.  He became a friend of Frida Kahlo with whom shared similar political views with.  In the 1950s he took many photographs of Kahlo and her husband Diego Rivera. He also photographed the artwork of Mexican painters such as Gerardo Murillo, Jesús Reyes Ferreira and José Clemente Orozco.  He died in Mexico City in 1982.  Even though he was not born in Mexico, he contributed to Mexican history with his photography impact and his services to the Spanish Civil War. There are more than 1,300 photographs from the Spanish Civil War in the archive in Madrid.
