Olga D. González-Sanabria aka Highest Ranked Latina at NASA

Olga D. González-Sanabria is a scientist and inventor. She was born and raised in Patillas, Puerto Rico.  She is the highest ranking Hispanic at NASA Glenn Research Center. She attended the University of Puerto Rico at Mayagüez, where she earned a BS in Chemical Engineering. She earned a MS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toledo in Ohio. In 1970, she took the position  As Director of the Engineering and Technical Services. She is responsible for planning and directing a full range of integrated services including engineering, fabrication, testing, facility management and aircraft services for the Glenn Research Center. She was also named a member of the U.S. government’s Senior Executive Service, the civilian equivalent to the rank of general or admiral. She played an instrumental role in the development of the “Long Cycle-Life Nickel-Hydrogen Batteries” which helps enable the International Space Station power system.  NASA has bestowed various awards upon her such as: the NASA Medal for Outstanding Leadership, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, the Women of Color in Technology Career Achievement Award, and an R&D 100 Award. In 2003, she was inducted into the Ohio Women’s Hall of Fame.  In 2007, HENAAC (Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference) announced the winners in each category representing the nation’s best and brightest engineers and scientists. They were selected by the HENAAC Selection Committee, an independent group of representatives from the industry, government, military and academia. González-Sanabria was recognized under the category of “Executive Excellence”.
